For the last year we were sharing a house while we sold our house in Ohio and looked for one in our new home state of Tennessee. Well, we found a house and have just moved in! There’s a lot of work left to do, but we’re really excited about all the possibilities.
As we were looking, we sort of settled on a basic set of criteria that we were really hoping for.
- Outside city limits (too many rules within cities)
- Barn or Outbuildings (chickens, etc)
- Land (2+ acres)
- 3 bedrooms, 2 bath
You’ll notice, many of the criteria are not really pertaining directly to the house. That’s kinda by design. Obviously the house is important, but our vision was more on the outside than within the house itself. We are really hoping to continue down the path of doing more for ourselves. Things like gardening, raising chickens, goats and maybe a cow are on our list of near term future goals.
Our hope is to learn how to grow our own food, raise animals and generally become more self sufficient. Ultimately this is the environment we want to raise our family in. We want our kids Cora, Wyatt and (yet to be named) to know where their food comes from and how to be good stewards of the land and their surroundings.
Our journey will be chronicled here and hopefully what we learn will be helpful to others.
Here are some photos of the New HouseofDixon!
