Homemade Ketchup

ketchupEvery parent knows that kids love ketchup!  Most moms dread the stuff because depending in the brand it is loaded down with high fructose corn syrup, sugar and “spices” (which allows them to sneak in MSG or things that include gluten and artificial coloring).  We take a healthy vegetable like a tomato, heavily process it until it becomes unhealthy.

Well on a spur-of-the-moment one day, I decided to make my own ketchup from ingredients that I stock in my pantry.  I modified these two recipes (In-A-Pinch Ketchup Recipe and Quick and Easy Ketchup Recipe) with the healthiest ingredients that I had on hand.  It turns out that I really liked the result, and so did the the kids. Here’s how to make your own:

  • 1 can of Tomato Paste (10oz)
  • 2-3 Tbsp Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Allspice
  • 1/2 tsp of Paprika
  • 1 tsp  Molasses
  • 3 Tbsp Honey (Preferably Raw and Local)
  • 3/4 to 1 1/4 cup of Water (depending on the consistency you desire)

Mix or Puree all until smooth in a food processor or high powered blender
