Our nation’s health care is about to undergo some huge changes courtesy of our elected officials. Some people are excited, some are quite upset, most (if you’re like us) are just confused with the whole thing. These changes definitely effect our family since we are in a position of needing to pay out-of-pocket for our insurance. For us, the so-called “Affordable Care Act” was going to triple the rates for our high deductable plan. It puts families like us in a position where it would be nearly impossible to cover the premium increase without taking the government subsidy.
Luckily, there are some options, and they’re called medical sharing programs.
What are medical sharing programs?
Simply put, a medical sharing program is an organization of people with commonly held beliefs that agree to help each other in the case of a medical problem. Everyone puts money into an account they control and allows the sharing program to distribute money from each person’s account to meet the medical needs of other members in the group.

Samaritan Ministries (from the video) is one of the programs we looked at, the other one is called Medi-Share.
Why we picked Medi-Share…
I think that both organizations would be great. The reason we picked medi-share boiled down to the fact that they offered the (high deductible) option which equates to a lower monthly share (premium) and the savings appealed to our family.
Why we like Christian Medical Sharing (and specifically Medi-Share)
#1 – It is affordable.
#2 – It does not pay for some elective procedures that conflict with our personal convictions.
#3 – It feels personal. Our monthly share is transferred directly from our account to the account of another who needs it. Although we know no medical details, God does, and we can pray for this person by name.
#4 – The company has a lot less administrative overhead than a typical insurance which makes me feel like my money is being put to the most efficient use.
#5 – They have a prayer stream where the members of medi-share can lift each other up in prayer.
#6 – There is a sense of community. Medical sharing is a group of individuals who have chosen to help each other when another is in need.
#7 – They support and cover homebirth if you are on plan with maternity care.
#8 – Based in scripture.
(from the Medi-Share website) Taking care of each other was a way of life for Christians in the days of the Church. “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:16
Christians continued to care for each other well into the twentieth century. But after World War II, government programs and insurance companies assumed the Church’s role as caretaker. When medical costs soared, many churches found they lacked the resources to care for their members. Christians view not-for-profit ministries like Medi-Share as a way to reclaim their biblical mandate to care and provide for their brothers and sisters in Christ.
#9 – There are no government subsidies involved so it doesn’t feel like the government could come around a try to have a say in your medical decisions.
#10 – My experience with their customer service has been great!
#11 – Incentive to share. They have an affiliate program that pays $100 per referral that signs up. Here is our link. http://bit.ly/18Y5Kkw
For us, Christian Medical Sharing and Medi-Share has been a huge blessing to our family, and we believe it could also be a blessing to yours.
